Watch our 3-minute overview video to see what the competition is like. The top two winners in each age division from each regional challenge move on to compete in the statewide competition. Winning teams at the statewide KidWind Challenge are invited to the Worlds KidWind Challenge. For 2026\, we are hosting six regional challenges in Kansas.

DESCRIPTION:Sacramento KidWind Regional Competition at Sacramento State – Hosted by SMUD \nThe KidWind Challenge at Sacramento State\, proudly hosted by SMUD\, is an exciting\, hands-on competition that invites middle students from across the region to design\, build\, and test their own small-scale wind turbines. This event empowers young innovators to delve into engineering\, sustainability\, and the science of wind energy through collaborative\, interactive problem-solving. \nIn preparation for the event\, teams will work together with mentors and community volunteers experimenting with materials and bringing creative ideas to life. Each team must bring their completed wind turbine with them to the competition\, where it will be tested onsite in a professional wind tunnel. Judges will evaluate turbines based on energy output\, innovative design\, and engineering quality. \nWhether you’re passionate about sustainability\, curious about STEM\, or eager to make new friends\, the SMUD KidWind Regional Competition offers an unforgettable opportunity to learn\, compete\, and help power a greener future.
