Virginia State Challenge

JMU’s The Center for the Advancement of Sustainable Energy (CASE) will host the Virginia State Challenge at JMU on April 12th, 2025.

The top teams from Virginia’s 6 regional challenges will receive an invitation to the state challenge. The top teams from the state challenge will receive an invitation to Kidwind Worlds.

Team can not register directly for the state challenge, but are encouraged to register for their closest regional challenge for a chance to attend the state challenge. Check out CASE’s website for more details on how to be involved!

On the day of the state challenge, teams meet with a panel of expert judges to present their project design process, complete a team instant challenge, and wind teams test their project for energy output in the Kidwind Wind Tunnel.

When?

April 12th, 2025. Check in is from 8am-9am. The day will end at 3:45pm.  

What to bring/prepare:

  • Lunch/SnacksTeams are encouraged to pack a lunch, eat on campus, or order delivery from a local restaurant. E-hall is the closest JMU dining option and is $15.75 for buffet style brunch/lunch.
  • A Profile Form filled out for each team
  • Your project and accompanying documentation (any posters, notebooks, etc.)
  • Cards/ board games/ books to stay busy while waiting between judging

Parking: Cars can park in Lot D1, D2, and C10 without the need for a parking permit. (Visitors are subject to parking citations if parked in Service Vehicle spaces, accessible spaces without proper permit, fire lanes or other prohibited areas. Timed spaces on campus are also enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.) If your team plans to arrive in a bus to JMU on April 12th, there are
three guest bus spots in lot C12. If these spots are full, busses can park in the car parking, taking multiple spots as needed. If there is not room for your
bus in either the bus spots or in the car parking, you would need to park over in R10.

Schedule:

 8:00-9:00am Team arrive, check in, and can test their wind turbine without scoring in open tunnel testing
9:15-9:45am Welcome and Keynote
10:00am-12:00pm Tunnel Testing– Wind teams must test their wind turbine in the tunnel at least once for an official score

Judge Interviews– Teams meet with judges according to the schedules below

Knowledge quiz– Teams test their knowledge in a Kahoot style quiz according to the schedule below

12:00-12:30pm Lunch
12:30-1:40p Tunnel Testing, Judge Interviews, and Knowledge quiz
