First Flight Schools Dominate NC Renewable Energy Challenge, Earn Invitation to KidWind Challenge Worlds
Students from First Flight Middle School and First Flight High School showcased their engineering and renewable energy expertise this past weekend, earning top honors at the North Carolina Renewable Energy Challenge held at the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese.

2025 North Carolina Renewable Energy Challenge hosted by Coastal Studies Institute
Today, on March 22, with funding from the North Carolina Renewable Ocean Energy Program and in partnership with KidWind and Jennette’s Pier, the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) hosts the day-long North Carolina Renewable Energy Challenge annually on the ECU Outer Banks Campus in Wanchese.

Sugar Maple Nature School Teams achieve top honors at KidWind State Competition | By Cindy Raimer
Sugar Maple Nature School’s 3rd-6th grade students showcased their exceptional skills in renewable energy design and problem-solving at the KidWind State Competition held in Madison this past weekend. Two of the school’s teams qualified for the Worlds Competition, which will take place in Phoenix, Arizona, this May.
