And That's A Wrap!
Thanks for a wonderful 2026 World KidWind Challenge!
This year's World KidWind Challenge brought 125 student teams from 21 U.S. states, Estonia, Taiwan, and Thailand to Madison, Wisconsin from May 17th through May 20th. The event was hosted by the Wisconsin Energy Institute at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, which allowed the teams to stay in the dorms and eat in the dining hall, giving students a fun and affordable taste of college life. We even had a surprise visit from Bucky the Badger, UW-Madison's trickster mascot, to welcome us to campus at the Kick-off! Special thanks to Allison Bender for making it all happen!
The adventure started before competition even began with a tornado warning on Sunday just moments before check-in that sent everyone sheltering in place in dorm basements, gyms, and hotel lobbies. Thanks to all the UW and hotel staff who helped usher teams to safety! Once the weather cleared and the competition got underway, the thanks go to the coaches, parents, administrators, and students for all their hard work to get to Worlds, and the determination and resilience they showed across the three days of competition.
Each team met this year's extra challenging competition elements with enthusiasm, determination, and out-of-the-box thinking! All teams completed our knowledge test, two "Instant Challenges" meant to test teams problem-solving skills and team work, and presented their designs and process to a panel of judges. The wind teams tested their turbines in low speed, medium speed, and high speed tunnels, with everyone trying their hand at our Yawing tunnel, which rotated turbines 90 degrees mid-test. Solar home teams showcased their designs under our competition solar testing rig, with judges evaluating both their builds and their presentations. Teams across both divisions showed incredible creativity and resilience....and yes, there was at least one spectacularly memorable turbine explosion this year. You know who you are. 🎉
High school wind teams had an extra gauntlet to run: the Shark Boil Challenge. We kicked things up a notch in the Shark Tunnel this year, with teams tasked with harnessing the power of their turbine to raise the temperature of water. The Shark Tunnel, which can go from 0 to 18 m/s with the twist of a knob, was too large to fit inside the venue this year, so teams trekked across the street to the basketball courts to take it on outdoors. Nothing like a little fresh air to round out the competition! Big thanks goes out to KidWinder Dick Anderson of Wisconsin who designed and built this special Worlds event!

Competition Elements
Every wind and solar team competing in the World KidWind Challenge will participate in several competition elements, including either wind turbine or solar structure testing, a presentation for a panel of judges, 2-3 Instant Challenges (including an optional Join Instant Challenge with the Collegiate Wind Competition), and the Quizbowl.
The judging, Instant Challenge, and Quizbowl components of Worlds will be scheduled for each team. Wind turbine and solar structure testing will be self directed in between the other Competition Elements during Worlds.
Bonus Points! There are 3 bonus points available that teams can earn BEFORE coming to Worlds. These must be completed by April 28th in order to receive the extra points.
- Complete your Team Profile with a working video (1 point)
- Submit ALL Attendee Forms for people joining your team for Worlds (students, coaches, and chaperones) with Liability & Media Release Forms (2 points).
Learn what to expect and important rules for each element by clicking on the buttons below.
Competition Elements with a * next to them will be scheduled at a specific time for each team.
Wind and Solar teams will be scheduled for a judging session to present their structure to a panel of judges, discuss their project, and answer questions.
We will have 3 judging rooms going at a time, so multiple teams will be scheduled for the same session.
We encourage all teams to prepare a formal presentation and share supplementary materials which may include photos, data tables, notebooks, and/or project iterations.
Note: Each team MUST bring a hardcopy of their 1-page Executive Summary document. Middle School and High School teams are expected to create their own 1-pager using the guidelines discussed here. Elementary School teams may use this Executive Summary Template.
While we ask that teams include their team number on the Executive Summary, we don't have those assigned yet! The team number can be written onto the Executive Summary closer to Worlds once they are posted on Team Profiles.
